Avenida 24 de Julho

LISBOA - AVENIDA 24 DE JULHO...

Uma das mais maiores e mais conhecidas avenidas de Lisboa e que corre paralela ao rio Tejo tem este nome: Avenida 24 de Julho. Acredito que nem toda a gente sabe a razão desta data. Até mesmo que poucos saberão ao que ela se refere.
De facto a data de 24 de Julho marca um episódio importante daquele que foi um dos momentos mais dramáticos da história de Portugal: refiro-me à Guerra Civil de 1828 a 1834 que opôs as tropas absolutistas de D. Miguel às forças liberais do seu irmão D. Pedro IV. 
Ora, em 24 de Julho de 1833 as tropas liberais comandadas pelo Duque daTerceira e que tinham desembarcado no Algarve e atravessado o Alentejo, entram em Lisboa. Sem dispararem um tiro, já que as tropas miguelistas tinham abandonado a cidade de madrugada, a capital do país é libertada das tropas absolutistas, antecipando o que iria acontecer no ano seguinte (1834), a vitória definitiva do Liberalismo em Portugal e o exílio de D. Miguel.

PORTUGUESE FEMALE POWER On 20 May 2006 we had the pleasure of spending 48 hours in Portugal adjudicating an attempt on the Guinness World Record for the Largest Human National Flag. The record to beat was set in Scotland earlier this year when 13,254 fans formed the Saltire, the Scottish national flag, at a Scotland v France Six-Nations game at Murrayfield Rugby Club. Held at Lisbon's national stadium, the event was organized by a company called Realizar who had plenty of experience having organized seven other successful Guinness World Records attempts. These include the Largest Hockey Stick, a staggering 56 ft 7 in ( 17.25 m) long, the Largest Human Logo made up of 34,000 people (part of Portugal's successful bid to host the Euro 2004 soccer championships) and the Largest Football with a whopping diameter of 19 ft 10 in (6.06 m)!
