Batalha de Aljubarrota

A Batalha de Aljubarrota decorreu no final da tarde de 14 de Agosto de 1385 entre tropas portuguesas, comandadas por D. João I de Portugal e o seu condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, e o exército castelhano de D. Juan I de Castela. A batalha deu-se no campo de São Jorge, nas imediações da vila de Aljubarrota, entre as localidades de Leiria e Alcobaça, no centro de Portugal. O resultado foi uma derrota definitiva dos castelhanos, o fim da crise de 1383-1385 e a consolidação de D. João I como rei de Portugal, o primeiro da dinastia de Avis. A aliança de Portugal com os seus aliados ingleses saiu reforçada e seria selada em 1386, no Tratado de Windsor, o mais antigo tratado activo no mundo. A paz com Castela só veio a estabelecer-se em 1411.

PORTUGUESE FEMALE POWER On 20 May 2006 we had the pleasure of spending 48 hours in Portugal adjudicating an attempt on the Guinness World Record for the Largest Human National Flag. The record to beat was set in Scotland earlier this year when 13,254 fans formed the Saltire, the Scottish national flag, at a Scotland v France Six-Nations game at Murrayfield Rugby Club. Held at Lisbon's national stadium, the event was organized by a company called Realizar who had plenty of experience having organized seven other successful Guinness World Records attempts. These include the Largest Hockey Stick, a staggering 56 ft 7 in ( 17.25 m) long, the Largest Human Logo made up of 34,000 people (part of Portugal's successful bid to host the Euro 2004 soccer championships) and the Largest Football with a whopping diameter of 19 ft 10 in (6.06 m)!
